Flodesk: Why I Switched from Free to Paid Email Marketing

Several months ago, I made the scary leap in my email marketing platform — from Mailchimp to Flodesk.

At the time, I was on the free plan for Mailchimp and was hesitant to start paying for any type of service.

However, after taking advantage of the free trail they offer, I hopped off the Mailchimp boat and am now at the helm of the Flodesk ship.

And it’s been worth every $19 penny for me a month since.

Here are three (of the many!) reasons I switched to Flodesk email marketing.

1. Price

Let’s start with the elephant in the room — money.

Yes, Mailchimp is free for the accounts under 2000… but with that free price came limitations and cumbersome emails and workload for me.

Flodesk’s beta price is $38 for unlimited everything. One price gets you everything you need.

And if you have a referral link, you get 50% off that price — locked in forever at $19/month.

So unlimited everything for LESS THAN $20/month.

For the same unlimited features, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, and Constant Contact can cost you upwards of $299/month.

Um, no thank you.

Bonus+: When you join Flodesk, you can also offer referrals and make that monthly payment back and offer others a great deal. #NoBrainer

2. Easy to Use

I’ve used almost all the major email marketing platforms out there — either for myself or for a client — and Flodesk makes the most sense. It has minimal menus, steps for tasks, and explanation of processes. (Not to mention a great customer service experience and Facebook group to troubleshoot with other creatives.)

No more confusion between “campaigns” or “tags” or “segments.” No more confusion on what goes where, and they take care of some of these steps for you (like tagging). Hell, you don’t even have to have a website to use Flodesk.

Because it just makes sense.

With how user-friendly it is, it has decreased the amount of time I spend creating, planning, and designing campaigns IN HALF.

Now I can use that time doing other, more productive things. #Winning

Just a few Flodesk terms:

  • Workflow = automated series of emails. You’ll set this up to do things like welcome your new subscribers, deliver a lead magnet, make a sales pitch, and tons more!
  • Audience/All Subscribers = your entire email audience. This is every single person who has offered you their email address. It’s your whole pie.
  • Segments = how you break up your entire audience in order to personalize emails. You can do this by segmenting however you want… maybe you segment your clients, or by a lead magnet they downloaded. Segment how you’d like, because the segmenting world is your oyster. This is a slice of your pie.

3. Aesthetically pleasing

The thing about emails is most of them have too many words. People don’t read emails anymore — they skim them.

I know, this is unfortunate for the writers in us, but it’s fact. I do it too.

Flodesk’s design tool not only provides a plethora of templates to choose from, but even when designing from scratch, it lends itself to creating emails that are easy to skim for the reader — raising open and click through rates astronomically.

There are many other reasons I switched over from Mailchimp to Flodesk for my email marketing (like the conversion rates and easy-to-read analytics, just to name 2 more), but the three above are the biggest for me personally.

I highly recommend taking the plunge with Flodesk, especially while they are still in beta and you can get on the front end of their pricing structure and new features they release monthly.

Have questions – leave them below in the comments for me.
