5 Christian Books to Read in the First Half of 2020

There are so many great non-fiction, Christian books on the horizon for 2020, but here are books to read I think you need purchase and to make time for ASAP.

*Reminder: if you’re worried about fitting all these books to read into your schedule, check out my post on where to find time to read. It’s a helpful guide.

Non-Fiction Christian Books to Read

Chasing Vines: Finding Your Way to an Immensely Fruitful Life, Beth Moore

Releases: Feb 4, 2020

Ah, Ms. Beth… she’s back again.

I was honored to receive an advanced reader (signed! eek!) copy of this book in January … and let me tell you, this book does not disappoint. One sentence that Beth Moore said in a video Bible study I did years ago was this:

“It is to your Father’s glory that you bear much fruit.”

I remember it clearly. I can still hear her saying it, bent over the podium she was teaching from, emphasizing “glory” and “much” in her semi-raspy, adamant, very Beth way.

I didn’t know for a long time she was directly referencing Scripture here — John 15:8.

This book is about that quote. About that scripture. About the fruit that EACH of us is called and equipped to bear.

As a self-proclaimed obsessive plant lady, I was fascinated with her in-depth research on the planting, growth, and harvesting process of horticulture. And then the deep dive into how intentional Scripture is through the vine metaphor.

Whether you’re a Beth Moore fan or not, whether you’re a woman or not, whether you are into fruit or not. This needs to be on your To-Read List in 2020 so that you can truly understand how nothing in your life is wasted and is meant to be fruitful.

The Art of Friendship: Creating & Keeping Relationships that Matter, Kim Wier

Released: Jan 7, 2020

I “met” Kim Wier over the phone during an interview for her popular radio show (it’s only the # 1 Christian radio show in America, NBD) last spring during my More for Mom promotional period. It was the best discussion and I was impressed with down-to-earthness (is that a real term?) with her deep Biblical knowledge.

So when I heard she was releasing a book about friendship, I said YES PLEASE. Kim shares her raw and authentic experiences with losing, developing, and maintaining Biblical friendships…. and adds her wit to the mix with stories, one of my favorites being about when she realized her dog had more friends than her.

In an over-connected world, this book will help you to understand friendship as a spiritual discipline and motivate you connect and strategize how to live out the divine calling of “friend.”

Here, Now: Unearthing Peace & Presence in an Overconnected World

Released: April 2019

I was a little late to the party on this book, but I read it at the oh-so-perfect time in my life. A time where I was in a semi-funk and wondering why I was unsettled in my day-to-day.

Kate’s call for us to slow down and disconnect to enjoy the present was a breath of fresh air for me. I found myself in tears multiple times throughout this book and appreciate her witty confessions and beautiful insights on the Here and Now.

If you feel pulled between your online presence and your offline life, pick up this book. It’s a beautiful reminder of the peace we have available when disconnected.

Get Out of Your Head: Stopping the Spiral of Toxic Thoughts, Jennie Allen

Releases: Jan 28, 2020

Doesn’t it seem we are ALWAYS in some sort of mental battle with ourselves?

Jennie Allen (one of the top Christian leader voices out there that I trust) tackles head-on toxic thinking patterns like victimhood, anxiety, and distraction in this much-needed book.

I’ve shared before how anxiety and even distraction are such mind ninjas on me… so this book is much needed in my own life.

The spiritual battle in our heads is a mean one, and this book is such a relief for those of us who need to be reminded who God is and who He calls us to be. If you’re wanting 2020 to be a year of mental freedom for you, don’t by-pass this one.

More for Mom AUDIOBOOK, by Kristin Funston.

I have been BESIDE MYSELF since November when God answered my prayer of making More for Mom an audiobook.

This book is for the hard working mamas to help them discover what happens when they believe God has more for them than what the world needs from them.

It’s a win-win. It’s the perfect opportunity to get the hope and encouragement this book message brings, that is so important for the moms of our generation.

  • These are great - I will def check them out! I just got Jess Connolly’s The Girl For the Job and I’m excited to dive into that one too!

  • Thanks for the awesome list - I will have to look them up. I am currently reading "What Does Your Soul Love?: 8 Questions That Reveal God's Work In You" by Gem & Alan Fadling - this is a treasure trove of personal insight especially for those who are going through some sort of transition or feelings of restlessness in their lives. I am looking forward to reading (it's next to my bed in my book pile!) Andrew Peterson's "Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making" it sounds super intriguing and comes very well recommended by my hopewriter friends.

    • Oh! I haven't head of the Fadling book yet! I need to look it up! Actually, I'm adding both of those to my list to look into! Thanks for the recommendations!
