The Top Psalms to Study & Why

There are 150 psalms in the Bible. That’s 150 recommended psalms to study.

So how do we know where to start in our study?

Let me start off by saying it is important to read and study all of the Psalms.

But in our decision on knowing where to start, the first psalms to go through are the ones that God is calling you to study, based on the season or circumstances you are in or you are headed into.

If you’re still unsure on which psalms to study, then I’m here to help.

This particular book of the Bible was compiled over many, many years and it provides instruction, inspiration, motivation, and consolation. The most unique thing about the psalms are they are all lyrical poems, meant to be sung… which in my opinion makes them not just beautiful, but fun to read and study.

While there are many ways to categorize and study, most of the psalms can be categorized into these 5 types:

  • Psalms of praise
  • Psalms of wisdom
  • Royal psalms
  • Psalms of thanksgiving
  • Psalms of lament

I recommend picking one psalm from each of these general categories. Doing this will help you:

  1. Understand who God is
  2. Who you are
  3. How to connect with and experience God more tangibly

I’ll be covering which specific psalms I believe are top ones to begin your study, based on this above criteria, as well as why during my breakout session at the 2020 Enjoy God’s Word Conference.

I’m so excited, because I’m intentionally covering psalms that aren’t necessarily the most popular ones. (I’m looking at you, Psalm 23 and 139 😜).

I’d love for you to join me, as myself, and hundreds of other women and Bible teachers online as we dive into the Book of Psalms to learn how to and be equipped to enjoy reading God’s Word.

Consider this your invitation to get practical tips, develop confidence in reading the Bible, and connect with a thriving community of women. All from the comfort of your home.

Leave a comment below if you have specific questions and then click through to learn more about what the Enjoy God’s Word Conference includes.
