What Does Jesus Have to Do with “Frozen?”

It’s April 2015.

It’s been over a year since the movie’s release, yet I still hear in the other room traces of:

“don’t let them in… don’t let them see… let it goooo… hold it back anymore… let it gooooooo”

That song, y’all. We can’t let it go in my house.
(Yes – that horribly cliche pun was intended there. I apologize for that.)

I know “Frozen” is old news in many households, but in ours? Well, it still reigns king queen.

You know, there came a point when I was sick of that movie and its songs. But I’ve come full circle and no longer cringe at the thought of it.

Speaking of cheesy cliches, maybe the reason we can’t “let it go” is because of Mickey Mouse’s cheese smeared all over this movie. You know, the typical Disney attributes – the beautiful animation, the beloved character’s fall from grace, the love story, the catchy tunes…

I don’t know. Whatever it is, YOU WIN, Disney. I’m throwing up the white flag. You’ve captured us Funstons and a year and a half later, and we’re still held captive.

Or…

Take the central theme of the story, for example:

Well played, Disney. I applaud you in your achievement of melodically animating the entire theme of the bible for Mainstream America:

And that song, trite as it is – speaks to us.

Because it’s REAL LIFE.

Cornballs and cheese aside, the lyrics stand for something.

Don’t worry – I won’t go into every line of every song (because AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT). But I’ll go ahead and point out some obvious ones (because it’s EASY).

(Also, I appreciate those of you who are still reading, because given the topic, I’ve reached a high level of annoying.)

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like I’m the queen.

Isn’t this how it is? Granted, it’s best seen in hindsight, but when we are feeling isolated, we are often suffering from the disease of self. We look inward, and don’t see the people all around us. We become the “queens” (or kings, for the fellas) of our isolated lives. And don’t think the “snow glows white on the mountain tonight” doesn’t slip past me as relating to Jesus somehow. There’s something there that my non-theological degree isn’t deciphering right off the top of my head. (Hey, Bible Study leaders and people who know Jesus better than me… feel free to comment below with your two cents. *thumbs up*)

The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried!

Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
Well, now they know!

Ahhh, there it is… the world’s favorite coping mechanism…

“Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know…”

With social mediums like Facebook, we can even “put on a show” for the world.

For the record, this is my default behavior. And when I retreat like this, it always – ALWAYS – affects those around me. I mean, I don’t freeze an entire kingdom every time, but it does have an effect on my friends and family.

 

“Be the good girl you always have to be…”

Yep – there I am. The performance-based person who always tries to DO good, SAY the right thing, and ACT a certain way to make up for my mistakes. But… (and that’s a BIG ‘but’), it doesn’t always happen.

When Jesus walked on Earth, his Word taught all about this song. See for yourself…

Isolation:

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20)

“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” (1st Corinthians 1:10)

Self-indulgence:

“But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.” (James 3:14-16)

Good works:

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17)

 

And of course, let’s not forget the overriding theme of the entire movie and how it compares to that of the Bible:

Only an act of True Love can thaw a frozen heart:

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

 

So what does Jesus have to do with Disney’s Frozen?

Absolutely everything.
