Bring On the Rain

Many of you, like I, saw this photo from Ben Sturner floating around social media. A little too weird it happened on the eve of 9/11, right? On the eve of one of our country’s greatest turning points, a rainbow emerges from the spot where the World Trade Center towers once stood.

How should we take this?

Coincidence? Some sort of Godly message?
What if we viewed it for what it is? Let’s look at 2 differing points of view: spiritual and scientific.

Because maybe they aren’t so different…

The bible says in Genesis 9:

13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

Okay – we got it. It’s a promise to never destroy people of the Earth via floods and water again. That’s pretty cool, right? (I like anything PRETTY, and what a pretty reminder.)

So what does science say? (Because according to the world, science and God aren’t related, right? RIGHT?!? 😉 )

I googled “how rainbows work” (because you know, Google has the answer to everything.). Here is one of the many explanations Google provided:

“Rainbows happen when sunlight and rain combine in a very specific way. The beams of sunlight separate into the colors we see in the rainbow as they enter a raindrop. Sunlight is actually made up of different colors that we don’t usually see. When a beam of sunlight comes down to Earth, the light is white.”

Um.

Holy mother of Godly references. Let me rephrase this paragraph the way I read it in my mind.

Rainbows happen when sunlight GOD and rain THE CRAP PART OF LIFE (storms/hardships/evil) combine in a very specific way. The beams of sunlight GOD separate into the colors BEAUTY we see in the rainbow as they enter a raindrop THE CRAP OF LIFE (storms/hardships/evil) Sunlight GOD is actually made up of different colors BEAUTY that we don’t usually see. (But through rainbows, he becomes visible.) When a beam of sunlight GOD comes down to Earth, the light JESUS is white PERFECT.

9/11 will forever be remembered in America as the rain, the beginning of the storm for our country. But God is strategic and allows for things to happen a certain way. I believe to reveal Himself. He came down to Earth in the most perfect manner.

To show there’s beauty in the rain.

God literally can show us Jesus’s beauty in the crappy-ness of this life.

14 years later and it is still raining. Our country is still at war. However, this war looks different today than it did 14 years ago. But it’s still happening. It’s happening everywhere – across the world, in our own cities, and in our own homes.

We face warfare everyday.

Maybe we need to intentionally look for the break in the clouds; where the Son-light hits the rain just right. Where, drenched in the wet, we see, feel and know His promises are coming to fruition.

And while it’s hard to see beyond the clouds while in it… there’s always a rainbow somewhere out there.

I say bring on the rain.

I’m praying for all the families directly affected and still hurting from this day.
I hope they saw God’s beauty shooting across NY.

  • Great point of view. I have seen the image but dismissed it. If it were really true then why are we only seeing the picture now. But after reading your post I agree to look at it differently. After all rainbows are a gift from God. Thanks.

    • Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts... and yes, I can see what you mean about "why now?" For sure. (Too little, too late?? haha!) But maybe He's just reminding us He hasn't forgotten that day either. :-)

  • Kristin, what a great post...I had not seen that photo, but I agree with your revised definition of how rainbows work...so good that we have God's Word to give us an eternal perspective...many blessings to you!
