The Thing About Proximity

If someone looked at me through my front window this afternoon, they might say that I’m a mom who loves her child so much she keeps her close all day. Or I’m a mom who is a brilliant multi-tasker. Or I’m a mom who knows how to handle it all.

It’s amazing how different things look from a distance.

Proximity changes everything.

When you get close, perspective changes. The closer we are, the more details appear.

I’ve been told (twice today, actually) that I seem to have it all together. Friend, I absolutely, positively do not have it all together. And I’m sort of embarrassed people think I do.

If that same person outside my window were to walk inside and stand with me, they’d realize I’m a desperate mom just trying to get her baby to sleep. They’d realize I’m a mom who is struggling to finish some her latest project because she (once again) overcommitted. They’d realize I’m a mom who regrets how she impatiently spoke to her child that morning.

They’d realize I’m a mom who doesn’t “have it all together,” because I don’t even “have it all” to be put together.

It’s important we invite people to see our details. Connection isn’t made from afar. Invite people in. Throw off the need to hide.

I promise you, it’s worth any effort, self-esteem issue and time you have.

Because life is done better together.

And we won’t do it better observing from afar.

  • True words. We can do better when we are united.
And yes, we may be looking at the same thing at the same time but see very differently.

  • I love that: Life is done better together. How true is that?! It's such a blessing to be able to show others our weaknesses and to have them walk along with us through those weaknesses. Thank you for sharing this and for your transparency!
