For Moms of Tween Daughters: Treasured Study

It’s been busy recently. My whole family has been plugging away at the everyday — school, work, holiday prep, travel, field trips, tumbling practices, homework, all the things… And If I’m truly honest, I haven’t felt very *connected* to my kiddos recently — we’ve all been busy with simply getting through each day.

Then the Treasured Study showed up in the mail.

I’ll be honest again – I chalked up this study as *one more thing* on our list of daily activities. I get books, devotionals, and studies to review a lot, so I didn’t think much more than usual about this one.

And then McKenna and I did it together.

Treasured Study is a 6-session faith-based study, designed to connect moms and daughters around topics critical to the preteen years: Identity, Body, Emotions, Friendships, Technology, and Faith.

The teen girls who shared in the videos were relatable, blunt, and Truth-filled. As a mom, I was thrilled with the videos.

Another confession: When we sat down to watch the video and work through the journal, I thought, “This will be so great for McKenna. I don’t really need it, of course, since I survived the tween years.

What I didn’t know is it would be so great for me too.

Listening to McKenna share some of her thoughts on identity, her body, her emotions… I was blown away. I had no idea she viewed herself and life the way she did.

It was so good for me to stop, sit down, and listen to her. It opened up conversation, but more than that, it made me hold still for a bit and pay attention.

The best part was the journal though. McKenna and I would lay in her bed, she’d journal, we’d both answer questions, read scripture, and giggle about the silly things we didn’t “like about our bodies” or what makes us mad or sad or goofy feeling.

McKenna enjoyed it too — see for yourself:

I love Treasured. I think it is so nice. It really helps me connect with God. And it is very relatable. Like when it said how your parents always say be careful, “Be careful to not put the entire bag of sour skittles into your mouth,” It is very funny too. I enjoyed all of the bonding activities where you do things with your mom to help connect with her. I also liked the art and coloring activities with the Bible verses. I think Treasured is a great resource for tween girls like me to connect with their moms, as well as the Lord.

-McKenna, age 10

The study came with a flash drive of digital files: teaching videos (DVD option included), discussion questions, leader guides, participant guides, and connection ideas and more.

While we didn’t need the leader and participant guides, since it was a one-on-one study with just my daughter and me, I still enjoy having it for reference.

Overall, this gets 5 stars from me. 😀
